DECA U Provincial Conference
January 22 – 24, 2010, Toronto, ON
This is the main highlight competition DECA uOttawa offers for its members! Held annually in Toronto at the Sheraton Centre, the competition brings together more than a thousand students from fifteen different universities in Ontario. Delegates congregate to compete in business simulations and case studies in various categories. It is an opportunity for individuals to exercise their knowledge, communication, presentation, creativity, and leadership skills.
Events throughout the weekend include a wine and cheese networking event, a chapter challenge, and of course, the DECA U social. The weekend concludes with an awards ceremony with medals and monetary prizes, awarded to the best competitors in each category.
This year’s conference marks the debut of two new events, the QuizBowl Challenge and the Economic Crisis Case Study. The QuizBowl challenge sees teams of two representing each chapter in a Jeopardy-style game, complete with buzzers. The team with the most points at the end of each round moves on to the next round, until an eventual winner is crowned! The Economic Crisis Case Study is aimed at non-business students; further details are to follow.
The Goal: To compete against other universities in a challenging real-life simulation thereby helping students develop critical thinking, communication, and problem solving skills.

Queen’s Invitational
November 19 – 21, 2009, Queen’s University, Kingston, ON
The Queen’s Invitational is one of two regional DECA competitions held throughout the academic year. Think of it as the Provincials, but on a much smaller scale. A select number of delegates from each DECA U chapter throughout Ontario go to Kingston to compete in business simulations and case studies. Compared to the Provincials, the Queen’s Invitational offers a smaller selection of categories, but it still gives you a taste of what is to come at the biggest conference of the year. The Queen’s Invitational never fails to live up to its name; all delegates that attend each year have an amazing time and for many, it is a warm-up to the real deal: the Provincials competition!
This year was DECA uOttawa’s first time competing at the Queen’s Invitational! On behalf of the executive team, I (Jenn Lee) would like to thank all those that came and tried out for a position on the Queen’s team. Congratulations to Aamir Tyyebi, Joshua Thornton, Rameez Tayyabi, and Alex Tyutyunnik for making the team! They represented uOttawa in Kingston and did a fantastic job! The Goal: To prepare DECA delegates for the provincial competition in Toronto. |
The Halloween Social
October 30, 2009, NV Ultraclub, Ottawa, ON
DECA uOttawa’s Halloween event “Come Play With Me” was a great success! A Halloween party was hosted on behalf of DECA uOttawa at NV Ultraclub on October 30th. The main purpose of this event was to help subsidize costs for our case competition trip held in Toronto (DECA U Provincials). This event was a great experience and acted as a social gathering where members of DECA uOttawa had the chance to socialize and get to know one another in preparation for Provincials in January. Sustainable Business Conference
November 13, 2009, uOttawa Campus, Ottawa, ON
This event gathers University of Ottawa students from different faculties to discuss the importance of environmental sustainability in business. While the content of the conference is targeted at students with an interest in business, the range of topics and quality of speakers makes this a learning experience for everyone who attends. For pictures from this event, check out our photo gallery located at the bottom of this page.
The Goal: To inform students of environmental and sustainability issues surrounding today’s economy.
